Instagram Notes last for 24 hours. After that they disappear automatically — no archive, no way to recover them, no view list to look back on. The 24-hour clock starts the moment you tap "Share."
That short lifespan is by design. Notes are meant to feel like quick, in-the-moment status updates — the cross between a tweet and a Story that sits above your DM inbox. Here's how to make the 24 hours actually count, plus the edge cases (Music Notes, replacing Notes, deleting early) that come up most.
How long do Instagram Notes last exactly
24 hours from the moment you post. The countdown starts at the second you tap Share, not at midnight or any other arbitrary point. A Note posted Tuesday at 3:47 p.m. disappears Wednesday at 3:47 p.m.
You'll see your Note above the DM inbox until it expires. After expiry, the Note vanishes from your view and from your mutuals' inboxes.
Can you extend a Note past 24 hours?
Not officially. The workaround: replace your Note shortly before it expires with the same (or updated) text. This isn't an extension — it's a fresh 24-hour clock on a new Note.
Open the DM inbox a few hours before your Note expires.
Tap your existing Note.
Tap "Replace your note."
Edit or keep the same text. Tap Share.
The previous Note disappears, and a fresh 24-hour clock starts. There's no limit to how often you can do this.
How to delete a Note before 24 hours
Tap your DM inbox.
Tap your own Note at the top.
Tap "Delete note."
The Note vanishes immediately. Use this if you posted something you regret or want to clear your Note slot for nothing.
Who sees your Note during the 24 hours
Two options at post time:
Followers you follow back — mutuals only. The default and most common.
Close friends — same list you use for Close Friends Stories.
People who follow you but you don't follow back never see Notes regardless of setting.
Music Notes also last 24 hours
The Music Note feature — where you pin a 30-second song clip to your Note — follows the same 24-hour expiry. The song clip is stored on Instagram's side, so you don't need to re-upload audio when you replace the Note.
Why 24 hours?
Instagram modelled Notes after the Stories format (also 24 hours) for the same reason: ephemerality drives engagement. A permanent status would get stale and ignored; an expiring status creates urgency for the few hours it's up.
Data we've watched: Notes posted in the morning get most engagement in the first 4-6 hours. By hour 18, replies drop sharply. Posting fresh Notes every 18-24 hours catches a new "first engagement wave" each time.
Can you recover an expired Note?
No. Notes are not archived anywhere — not in your DMs, not in your profile, not in Instagram's data export. If you want to keep a Note for memory or content reuse, screenshot it before the 24-hour mark.
How to make 24 hours actually count
Post early in your audience's most-active window. Tuesday 10 a.m. catches the highest first-hour engagement.
Ask a question. Notes that prompt a reply outperform Notes that announce something. "Best coffee in your city?" beats "morning coffee 😊."
Use the 60 characters fully. Short two-word Notes ("morning vibes") get scrolled past. 60-character questions get replies.
Replace once per day. Posting a new Note at the same time each day trains mutuals to look for it.
Reply to every reply. Replies to Notes open DM threads. Don't leave them hanging.
