Instagram Insights is the platform's native analytics dashboard — available on Business and Creator accounts. It shows post reach, engagement, follower demographics, top content, and when your audience is most active. Insights is the single most-important tool for any Instagram creator who wants to grow strategically rather than guess.
Here's the full breakdown of every metric Insights tracks, how to interpret what matters, and which 5 metrics to check weekly.
How to access Instagram Insights
Requires Business or Creator account (free to switch). To switch:
- Profile → three-line menu → Settings and privacy.
- Account → "Switch to Professional account."
- Pick Creator (for individuals) or Business (for companies).
- Pick a category that matches your content.
After switching, tap your profile → "Insights" or "Professional Dashboard." Data starts populating immediately, but full demographics require 100+ followers.
Insights — Overview tab
| Metric | What it measures | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Accounts reached | Unique users who saw your content | Top growth + algorithm signal |
| Accounts engaged | Users who liked/commented/shared/saved | Content quality signal |
| Total followers | Current follower count + new follows | Brand growth |
| Content shared | Total posts/Reels/Stories you published | Consistency check |
Reach + engagement matter most. Reach alone is vanity if engagement is dead. Engagement alone (without reach) means tiny audience.
Post-level Insights
Tap any post → "View Insights" below the photo. Shows:
- Reach. Unique users who saw the post.
- Impressions. Total views (one user counted multiple times if they revisited).
- Engagement. Likes + comments + saves + shares.
- Profile visits. Users who clicked your profile from the post.
- Follows. New followers gained from this post.
- Source breakdown. Home feed / Explore / Hashtags / Profile / Other.
"Source breakdown" is the most insightful field. If Explore = 50% of reach, your post is being recommended. If "Hashtags" = 30%, hashtag strategy is working. If "Home" = 95%, you're only reaching followers (no algorithm boost).
Reel-specific Insights
Reels track different metrics:
- Plays. Number of times the video was started.
- Reach. Unique users who saw it.
- Watch time. Total seconds watched across all plays.
- Average watch time. Per-view duration.
- Like, comments, shares, saves.
- Replays (loops). Number of times the Reel restarted.
Watch time matters most for Reels. The algorithm prioritises completion rate + replays. A 30-second Reel with 25-second average watch time crushes a 90-second Reel with 30-second average.
Story Insights
- Reach. Unique viewers.
- Replies. DMs sent in response to the Story.
- Profile visits.
- Exits. Users who left the Story before it finished.
- Forward taps. Users who skipped ahead.
- Back taps. Users who replayed.
- Reach %. Of total followers, what % saw it.
Stories with high "Back taps" = content held attention (people wanted to re-watch). Stories with high "Forward taps" = content lost attention (people wanted to skip).
Audience Insights — knowing who follows you
Profile → Insights → Total followers. Shows:
- Top locations. Cities + countries of followers.
- Age range. 13-17, 18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65+.
- Gender split.
- Most active hours. When followers are on Instagram.
- Most active days. Day-of-week breakdown.
"Most active hours" is the single most useful field. Schedule posts to land 15-30 minutes before peak — algorithm uses your first-hour engagement to decide whether to push wider.
Where your audience finds you
Profile → Insights → Accounts reached → tap → Source. Shows the breakdown:
- Home feed. Followers seeing your post in their main feed.
- Profile. Users who visited your profile directly.
- Explore. Algorithm-driven discovery.
- Hashtags. Users who found you via hashtag search.
- Other. Direct shares, DMs, links.
Growth-stage accounts should aim for 30%+ from "Explore + Hashtags + Other" combined. If 95% of reach is "Home," your content isn't being discovered by new audiences.
Top content — what's working
Profile → Insights → Content you shared. Tap "See all" + filter by time range (7 days, 30 days, 90 days, max). Sort by reach, engagement, plays, comments, etc.
Spend 15 minutes weekly scanning your top 5 posts. Two questions:
- What format? (Reel vs carousel vs single image vs Story)
- What topic? (Pillar mapping)
This tells you what to make more of. Most creators waste 50% of effort making content that doesn't work, because they never audit + iterate.
5 Insights to check weekly
- Reach trend. 7-day vs prior 7-day. Up? Down? Why?
- Engagement rate. Engagement ÷ Reach. Healthy = 4-8%.
- Follower growth. New followers minus unfollows.
- Top post. What hit best? Why?
- Most active hours. Recheck — sometimes audience timing shifts.
15 minutes weekly + clear notes = the loop most creators skip + most pros run religiously.
Insights limits + what they don't show
- Data starts at the moment you switched to Professional account — no historical retroactive data.
- Some metrics require 100+ followers (demographics).
- No competitor data — see only your own account.
- No keyword/search query data — unlike Google Search Console.
- No SEO data — see "from search" but not which terms.
- Data has a 24-48 hour delay for some metrics.
For competitor insights, use third-party tools like Sprout Social, Hootsuite, or Iconosquare.
